Q.2: Write short answers.(6×2=12)
(i)
Describe any two benefits of multithreading.
Answer:
  • Responsiveness: a program keeps running even if one thread is blocked or busy (e.g. the screen stays active while a file loads).
  • Better resource use and speed: threads share the memory of the same process and can run in parallel on multiple CPU cores, so work finishes faster.
(ii)
Why file system is important for data management?
Answer: A file system organizes data into files and folders so it can be stored, named, searched, retrieved, copied, moved and deleted easily. It also tracks free space, protects data with permissions and prevents files from overwriting each other.
(iii)
Describe the key features and applications of real time operating system.
Key features: fixed and predictable response time, strict deadlines, priority-based scheduling, high reliability and very low latency.
Applications: medical equipment (pacemakers, ICU monitors), industrial robots, aircraft and air-traffic control, car airbag/ABS systems and missile systems.
(iv)
How is kernel different from shell.
Answer: The kernel is the core of the OS; it directly manages hardware, memory, processes and devices. The shell is the user interface (command line or graphical) that takes the user’s commands and passes them to the kernel to execute.
(v)
Define one way to create a new user account in Windows
Answer: Open Settings → Accounts → Family and other users → Add account (or Control Panel → User Accounts → Manage another account), enter the user name and password, then click Next / Finish.
(vi)
Why is the operating system referred to as the “central controller”?
Answer: Because it controls and coordinates all hardware and software of the computer: it manages the CPU, memory, storage and I/O devices, schedules processes, and provides services to application programs and users.
(PART – II)
☆Write a detailed answer.(5)
Q.3:
Describe system calls, their purpose, and give examples of at least three types.
System call: a request made by a user program to the operating system kernel to perform a service that the program is not allowed to do directly (e.g. access hardware, files or memory). It works as the bridge between user mode and kernel mode.
Purpose: provide safe, controlled access to hardware and OS services, protect the system, and give programmers a standard interface.
Types with examples:
  • Process control: fork(), exec(), exit(), wait() – create, run and end processes.
  • File management: open(), read(), write(), close() – work with files.
  • Device management: ioctl(), read(), write() – request and use devices.
  • Information maintenance: getpid(), time(), setattr() – get or set system data.
  • Communication: pipe(), socket(), shmget() – exchange data between processes.
