Attempt any 10 Questions. 10×2 = 20
i. What are polymers?
Polymers are giant molecules of very high molecular mass formed by joining a large number of small repeating units called monomers through covalent bonds. Example: polythene, nylon.
ii. What is polymerization? Give example.
The process in which many small monomer molecules join together to form a large polymer molecule is called polymerization. Example: ethene molecules join to form polythene.
n CH2=CH2 → [ –CH2–CH2– ]n
iii. What is an addition polymer?
A polymer formed by the repeated addition of unsaturated monomer molecules (with a double bond) without loss of any small molecule is called an addition polymer. Examples: polythene, polypropylene, PVC.
iv. What is a condensation polymer?
A polymer formed by joining monomers having two functional groups, with the elimination of a small molecule such as H2O or HCl, is called a condensation polymer. Examples: nylon-6,6, polyester (PET).
v. How is condensation polymer formed from a diamine and dicarboxylic acid?
The –NH2 group of the diamine reacts with the –COOH group of the dicarboxylic acid, eliminating H2O and forming an amide (peptide) link –CO–NH–. Repeating this gives polyamide (nylon-6,6).
n H2N–(CH2)6–NH2 + n HOOC–(CH2)4–COOH → [–NH–(CH2)6–NH–CO–(CH2)4–CO–]n + 2n H2O
vi. How composition of polymers can be changed? Give its importance.
Composition can be changed by using different monomers, by mixing (copolymerization) two or more monomers, or by adding additives (plasticizers, fillers, dyes). Importance: polymers with desired properties such as strength, flexibility, colour and heat resistance can be obtained.
vii. What is it repeating in polymer?
The repeating unit is the smallest group of atoms (derived from the monomer) that is repeated again and again in the polymer chain. In polythene it is –CH2–CH2–.
viii. How dicarboxylic acid recover from polyester?
By hydrolysis: heating the polyester with water (acid or base) breaks the ester links, giving back the dicarboxylic acid and the diol (alcohol).
Polyester + H2O → HOOC–R–COOH + HO–R′–OH
ix. What is plastic?
Plastics are synthetic polymers that can be moulded into different shapes by heat and pressure and keep that shape on cooling.
x. Write the uses of Plastics.
Used to make tables, chairs, cups, plates, water bottles, pipes, toys, bags, packaging, electrical insulation and household goods.
xi. What is Synthetic Fibers? Give example.
Synthetic fibres are long, thin, thread-like man-made polymers used to make fabrics. Examples: nylon, polyester, acrylic, rayon.
xii. Which natural fibre does acrylic resemble and why?
Acrylic resembles wool because it is soft, light, warm and can be dyed easily, so it is used as artificial wool.
xiii. Why is burning plastics dangerous?
Burning plastics releases poisonous gases such as CO, HCl and dioxins, which pollute air and cause breathing problems, cancer and global warming.
xiv. How plastics are accommodate in environment ?
Plastics are non-biodegradable, so they are managed by reducing use, reusing, recycling, and proper disposal instead of burning or dumping them in land and water.
