Carboxylic Acids
2. Write short answers to any six (6) questions.[6 × 2 = 12]
- (i)Why is acetic acid used in industries? It is a good solvent and a raw material: it is used to make vinegar, esters, dyes, plastics, synthetic fibres and lacquers.
- (ii)What is Flavouring Agents?Substances added to food and drinks to give or improve taste and smell. Esters and acids such as citric acid are common examples.
- (iii)Write the important role of Ester.Esters give fruity smells and flavours, so they are used in perfumes, soft drinks and sweets. They are also used as solvents (e.g. ethyl acetate) and to make polyester fibres.
- (iv)Write the used of Palmitic and stearic acid. They are fatty acids used to make soaps, candles, cosmetics and detergents.
- (v)Write the properties of glacial acetic acid.Pure (100%) acetic acid. It is a colourless liquid with a sharp vinegar-like smell, freezes into ice-like crystals at about 16.6°C, and is corrosive and miscible with water.
- (vi)Why are food preservatives added to food?To stop bacteria, yeast and mould from growing, so food stays fresh and does not spoil for a longer time.
- (vii)Write the application of carboxylic acid in medicine industry.Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is made from a carboxylic acid and is a pain reliever and fever reducer. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is also a carboxylic acid.
- (viii)Write the name of any two esters and their flavours.Ethyl butanoate – pineapple flavour. Pentyl (amyl) acetate – banana flavour.
- (ix)Write the uses of acetic acid and oleic acid.Acetic acid: vinegar, food preservative, solvent, making esters and dyes.
Oleic acid: making soaps, cosmetics, lubricants and detergents.
Note: Attempt any one question.[5 × 1 = 5)
- 3.Write the industrial Application of carboxylic acid and Esters as synthetic fibers.A diol (e.g. ethylene glycol) reacts with a dicarboxylic acid (e.g. terephthalic acid) and joins repeatedly to form a long-chain polyester (Terylene/Dacron). It is used for clothes, ropes, fishing nets, sails and bottles. Carboxylic acids also help make nylon-type fibres and dyes.
- 4.Write the use of Esters in Daily Life.Perfumes and scents; flavours in sweets, ice cream and drinks; solvents such as ethyl acetate in nail polish remover and for extracting caffeine; paints and varnishes; polyester clothes; and fats and oils in food.
