2. Write short answers to any six (6) questions.
[6 × 2 = 12]
- (i)Write the sources and structure of stearic acid and palmitic acid.Stearic acid (C17H35COOH): saturated fatty acid with 18 carbons; sources: animal fats (beef tallow), cocoa butter, shea butter.
Palmitic acid (C15H31COOH): saturated fatty acid with 16 carbons; sources: palm oil, animal fats, butter.Stearic acid: CH3(CH2)16COOH
Palmitic acid: CH3(CH2)14COOH
- (ii)What is soap? How was prepared in ancient times?Soap is the sodium or potassium salt of a long-chain fatty acid (e.g. C17H35COONa). In ancient times it was prepared by boiling animal fat (tallow) with wood ash (a source of potash, an alkali) and water.
- (iii)How can our body obtain Vitamin D?From sunlight (the skin makes vitamin D when exposed to UV rays), and from foods such as fish liver oil, egg yolk, milk, butter and fortified foods.
- (iv)How is DNA different from RNA?DNA: double-stranded, contains deoxyribose sugar, bases A, T, G, C, stores genetic information. RNA: single-stranded, contains ribose sugar, bases A, U, G, C (uracil instead of thymine), helps in protein synthesis.
- (v)How mass of polymer can measure?Molar mass of a polymer can be measured by methods such as osmometry, viscometry, light scattering, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and mass spectrometry.
- (vi)What is genetic testing?A test of a person’s DNA (from blood, saliva or tissue) to find changes (mutations) in genes that may cause genetic disorders or increase the risk of a disease.
- (vii)What is gene therapy?A technique to treat or prevent genetic disease by replacing a defective gene with a healthy gene in the patient’s cells.
- (viii)What is the role of lipids in our body?Lipids store and supply energy, insulate the body, protect internal organs, form cell membranes, help make hormones and carry fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K).
- (ix)What is the function of RNA?RNA carries the genetic message from DNA and helps to make proteins (mRNA carries the code, tRNA brings amino acids, rRNA forms ribosomes).
Note: Attempt any one question.
[5 × 1 = 5]
3.
What are vitamins? Write its importance (Source and Disease due to deficiency of vitamins).
Vitamins: organic compounds needed in small amounts for normal growth, health and body functions.
A – carrots, liver, milk → night blindness
B-complex – whole grains, meat, eggs → beri-beri
C (ascorbic acid) – citrus fruits, guava → scurvy
D – sunlight, fish oil, eggs → rickets
E – vegetable oils, nuts → weak muscles / fertility problems
K – green vegetables → delayed blood clotting

4.
Write applications of Biochemistry.
Medicine (diagnosis, drugs, vaccines, insulin), genetic testing and gene therapy, forensic science (DNA fingerprinting), agriculture (fertilizers, pesticides, improved crops), food and nutrition, industry (soap, fermentation, enzymes, biofuels) and environmental protection.
