TIME: 22 MINMARKS: 20
Attempt any 10 Questions.    10×2 = 20
i. Why are polymers important in daily life?
Polymers are used in clothing, food packaging, furniture, pipes, toys, medicines and electrical goods. They are cheap, light, strong and easy to shape, and proteins, starch and DNA are natural polymers essential to life.
ii. Why have synthetic polymer replaced wood, metal and cotton?
Synthetic polymers are cheaper, lighter, more durable, resistant to rust, rot and chemicals, and can be moulded into any shape and colour, so they replaced wood, metal and cotton in many uses.
iii. How does addition polymerization occur?
An initiator opens the double bond of a monomer, forming a reactive site. This site attacks the double bond of the next monomer, and the chain keeps growing by repeated addition until the reaction stops. No small molecule is lost. n CH2 CH2 Initiator [ –CH2 –CH2 – ] n
iv. Why does polymerization continue at both ends?
Because the growing chain has a reactive (free radical/active) site at each end, so new monomers can add at both ends until the reaction is terminated. ← add monomer • CH2 –CH2 –…–CH2 –CH2 • add monomer →
v. Write any two characteristic properties of Addition Polymerization.
(1) Monomers must contain a double bond. (2) No by-product (small molecule) is eliminated, so the polymer has the same empirical formula as the monomer. The reaction is also a fast chain reaction.
vi. How does condensation polymerization occur?
Monomers with two functional groups react step by step; each link formed eliminates a small molecule such as H2O or HCl.
n HOOC–R–COOH + n H2N–R′–NH2 → [–CO–R–CO–NH–R′–NH–]n + 2n H2O
vii. How starting monomers are prepared from addition monomer?
Addition monomers such as ethene and propene are obtained by cracking of petroleum (hydrocarbons), and other monomers are made from them by chemical reactions.
viii. Write the specific properties of polymer
High molecular mass, strength and toughness, light weight, flexibility, electrical and heat insulation, chemical resistance, and low cost.
ix. Write the examples of Plastics.
Polythene, polypropylene, PVC, polystyrene, bakelite, PET.
x. Write the properties of plastics.
Light weight, easily moulded, cheap, water and chemical resistant, poor conductor of heat and electricity, strong and durable.
xi. Write the properties of synthetic fiber.
Strong, elastic, lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, dry quickly, and not attacked by moths or insects.
xii. Why do plastics cause environmental problems?
Plastics are non-biodegradable and stay in soil and water for hundreds of years; burning them releases toxic gases; they harm animals and block drains.
xiii. Write the application of polyester
Used for clothing fabrics, bottles (PET), ropes, sails, bedsheets, curtains and tyre cords.
xiv. How 3D layer of polymers are formed
Polymer material is melted or liquid-resin is deposited and hardened layer by layer using a 3D printer, building up the object from a digital design.
