2. Write short answers to any six (6) questions.[6 × 2 = 12]
(i)
Name the first four aliphatic alcohols used as fuels and why?
Methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol. They burn cleanly, release energy and can be made from renewable sources.
(ii)
Write any two disadvantages of alcohol used as fuels.
(1) They give less energy per unit volume than petrol. (2) They are corrosive to some engine parts and costly to produce in bulk.
(iii)
Why is more alcohol fuel needed to travel the same distance?
Alcohol has a lower energy density than petrol, so a larger volume is required to give the same energy.
(iv)
Why are alcohol fuels called carbon neutral?
The CO2 released on burning is about equal to that absorbed by the plants used to make them.
(v)
Why alcohol can use in cosmetic industry?
It is a good solvent, evaporates quickly and has antimicrobial action.
(vi)
What pollutants does Ethanol cut down on?
It reduces carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, sulphur oxides and particulate matter.
(vii)
Give important property of ethanol which act as a solvent.
Its polar −OH group and small non-polar chain let it dissolve both polar and non-polar substances.
(viii)
Write harmful effect of drinking ethyl alcohol.
It damages liver and brain, impairs judgment and causes addiction and accidents.
(ix)
Why does the amount of [heat] evolved during burning of alcohols go on increasing from lower to higher alcohols?
Each higher alcohol has an extra −CH2− group, so more C–H and C–C bonds burn and more heat is released.
Note: Attempt any one question.[5 × 1 = 5]
3.
Write the application of alcohol as fuel along with its disadvantages.
Applications: blended with petrol (gasohol), used in racing cars, spirit lamps and as a cleaner-burning fuel.
Disadvantages: lower energy content, higher cost, cold-start problems, corrosion and large land/crop use.
Disadvantages: lower energy content, higher cost, cold-start problems, corrosion and large land/crop use.
4.
Explain Impact of Alcohols on Daily life.
Positive: fuel, solvents, antiseptics, perfumes, cosmetics and medicines.
Negative: drinking causes health damage, addiction, accidents and social problems.
Negative: drinking causes health damage, addiction, accidents and social problems.
