Here is Subjective Part of Paper.

Marks: 48
CHEMISTRY (SUBJECTIVE TYPE)
Time: 1:45 minute
Part - I
2.Write short answers to any Five (5) questions:[5x2=10]
3.Write short answers to any Five (5) questions:[5x2=10]
4.Write short answers to any Five (5) questions:[5x2=10]
Part - II
NOTE:- Attempt any two questions.[9x2=18]
5.
(a) Describe the preparation of ethanol by fermentation process.
Fermentation: Sugar (molasses) or starch is converted to ethanol by enzymes of yeast.
  • Starch is first hydrolysed to glucose by the enzyme diastase/amylase.
  • Glucose is changed to ethanol and carbon dioxide by zymase of yeast:
    C6H12O6 → 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
  • Conditions: about 35 °C, fresh yeast, absence of oxygen, 2–3 days.
  • The product contains about 10–15% ethanol; fractional distillation gives about 95% ethanol.
(b) Write a note on Hydration of Ethene or Ethylene.
Hydration of ethene: Ethene reacts with steam to form ethanol.
CH2=CH2 + H2O → CH3CH2OH
  • Conditions: 300 °C, 60–70 atm, H3PO4 (on silica) as catalyst.
  • Continuous, fast process giving pure ethanol; ethene comes from petroleum (non-renewable).
  • Unreacted ethene is recycled.
6.
(a) Give a comparison of fermentation reaction and catalytic hydration of ethene for the preparation of ethanol.
  • Raw material: fermentation – sugar/starch (renewable); hydration – ethene (non-renewable).
  • Rate: fermentation – slow; hydration – fast.
  • Process: fermentation – batch; hydration – continuous.
  • Purity: fermentation – impure (10–15%); hydration – very pure.
  • Conditions: fermentation – 35 °C, yeast, no air; hydration – 300 °C, 60–70 atm, H3PO4.
  • Cost/equipment: fermentation – simple and cheap; hydration – costly plant.
(b) Explain the Combustion of Alcohols.
Alcohols burn in excess air to give carbon dioxide and water, releasing heat.
C2H5OH + 3O2 → 2CO2 + 3H2O + heat
2CH3OH + 3O2 → 2CO2 + 4H2O + heat
  • Burn with a clean, blue, smokeless flame; no oxides of sulphur are produced.
  • Heat of combustion increases from methanol to butanol as the chain gets longer.
  • Energy is released because strong O–H and C=O bonds form in the products.
7.
(a) Describe the applications of ethanol in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries?
  • Pharmaceutical: solvent for drugs, cough syrups and tinctures; antiseptic/disinfectant for wounds and skin; preservative; used to make chloroform and ether.
  • Cosmetic: solvent and carrier in perfumes, deodorants, hair sprays, aftershave, lotions and nail polish; antibacterial and quick drying (volatile).
(b) Explain Impact of Alcohols on Daily life.
  • Fuel: ethanol is blended with petrol (gasohol); spirit lamps and stoves use methylated spirit.
  • Solvent: paints, varnishes, polishes, inks.
  • Medicine and hygiene: antiseptics, hand sanitizers, disinfectants.
  • Industry: raw material for vinegar, esters, ether and other organic compounds.
  • Environment: ethanol fuel reduces greenhouse gas emission and pollutants.
  • Warning: methanol is poisonous, and drinking alcohol harms health.
