Chapter 1: Basic Digital Literacy | Subjective
Note: It is compulsory to attempt any four (4) parts each from Q.No.2 and Q.No.3, and any two (2) questions from Part II. Write the same question number and part number as given in the question paper.
SUBJECTIVE – PART IMarks: 16
Q.2: Write short answers to any FOUR parts. (4 × 2 = 8)
- What is sorting? Give one example.
Ans: Sorting means arranging data in a specific order. Example: sorting a list of students by their names or marks.
- Differentiate between =SUM(A1,A5) and =SUM(A1:A5).
Ans:
=SUM(A1,A5) =SUM(A1:A5) Adds only the two cells A1 and A5 Adds all cells from A1 to A5 (a cell range) For 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 the result is 60 For the same values the result is 150 - How can colours and borders make a budget neat and clear?
Ans: Colours and borders can highlight important expenses, or mark savings in a different colour. This makes the budget neat, clear and easy to read.
- Write any two benefits of using a spreadsheet.
Ans: 1) It makes work faster, neater and more accurate. 2) It helps us store, organize and calculate data easily, for calculations and data management in schools, offices and businesses.
- Define the title, labels and legend of a chart.
Ans: A title tells what the chart is about. Labels show what each axis or part represents. A legend explains the colours or symbols used in the chart.
- Which key combination opens the Format Cells window? What can we see in it?
Ans: Ctrl + 1 opens the Format Cells window, where we can format cells and see a preview.
Q.3: Write short answers to any FOUR parts. (4 × 2 = 8)
- A teacher has the marks of many students. How can she show only the students who scored above 80?
Ans: She can apply a filter (Ctrl + Shift + L) on the marks column and set the condition to above 80. Only the matching rows are shown. The other rows are hidden, not deleted.
- What is a data report? Give one example.
Ans: A data report is a way to present information in an organized form. We enter data, perform calculations, and use charts or tables to make clear reports. Example: teachers prepare reports of students’ marks, and shopkeepers prepare reports of their sales.
- Write the steps to create a new blank workbook in Microsoft Excel.
Ans:
- Open Microsoft Excel.
- Click File (top-left).
- Select New.
- Click Blank Workbook. The new file is created.
- Write the shortcut keys to AutoFit one column and all columns.
Ans: One column: select the column and press Alt + H + O + I. All columns: press Ctrl + A to select the entire sheet, then press Alt + H + O + I.
- Write the names of any three popular spreadsheet programs.
Ans: 1) Microsoft Excel 2) Google Sheets 3) LibreOffice Calc.
- How can we use cell values of another sheet in a formula? Give an example.
Ans: We write the sheet name followed by the ! sign before the cell range. Example: =SUM(Sheet2!A1:A5).
SUBJECTIVE – PART IIMarks: 14
Attempt any TWO questions. (2 × 7 = 14)
Q.4: Explain the basic tasks performed in a spreadsheet: data entry, formatting data and basic calculations (SUM, AVERAGE, MIN and MAX), with examples. (7)
Ans:
- Data entry: typing numbers, words or formulas into cells, such as student names, marks or prices. Each piece of data must be in the correct cell to keep the table organized. Enter moves to the cell below and Tab moves to the cell on the right.
- Formatting data: changing font size, colour and alignment and adding borders. For example, headings can be bold and totals a different colour. Ctrl + 1 opens the Format Cells window.
- Basic calculations: a formula starts with = followed by the function name and cell range. SUM adds numbers, AVERAGE finds the mean, MIN shows the smallest value and MAX shows the largest.
| Formula | Result |
|---|---|
| =SUM(A1:A5) | 150 |
| =AVERAGE(A1:A5) | 30 |
| =MIN(A1:A5) | 10 |
| =MAX(A1:A5) | 50 |
Q.5: Describe the types of charts (Bar, Pie and Line) and explain how to choose the right chart for the given data. (7)
Ans: Charts help teachers, students and professionals explain their data better. They are useful in reports, presentations and research, and can show trends, differences and patterns that are not easy to see in a table.
- Bar chart: shows data using bars of different lengths; useful for comparing values, e.g. marks of different students.
- Pie chart: shows data as parts of a circle and helps us see how each part contributes to the whole.
- Line chart: connects points with lines to show changes over time, such as marks over months or sales during a year.
Q.6: What is a spreadsheet? Explain its structure (cells, rows and columns) in detail. (7)
Ans: A spreadsheet is a computer program that looks like a large table made of small boxes called cells. Each cell can hold numbers, words or formulas. It helps us store, organize and calculate data easily, from simple lists to complex mathematical problems. Examples: Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc.
Structure: all data is arranged in rows and columns.
Structure: all data is arranged in rows and columns.
- Cell: the smallest unit, a small box where we type numbers, words or formulas. Its address is the column letter plus the row number (A1, B2).
- Row: a horizontal line of cells with a number (1, 2, 3). One row can hold all information about one person or item, such as a student’s name and marks.
- Column: a vertical line of cells with a letter (A, B, C). We can keep all names in one column and marks in another. Columns are important for sorting, filtering and calculations.
