Q.1:(08)
1.Which property or properties of ethanol make it suitable to be used in cosmetic industry?
(A) Easily Flammable(B) Highly volatile and deodorizing(C) Antipyretic(D) Sedative
Answer: (B) Highly volatile and deodorizing
2.The heat of combustion of methanol is:
(A) -1367 kJ/mol(B) -2017 kJ/mol(C) -726 kJ/mol(D) -2676 kJ/mol
Answer: (C) -726 kJ/mol
3.Which is the correct name of the following alcohol:
(A) 2-Methylpentan-4-ol(B) 4-Methylpentan-2-ol(C) Hexan-2-ol(D) Hexan-4-ol
CH3–CH–CH2–CH–CH3OHCH3
Answer: (B) 4-Methylpentan-2-ol – the longest chain has 5 carbons, numbered from the end nearest the –OH group (OH on C-2, methyl on C-4).
4.As we go from methanol to butanol, the heat of combustion:
(A) Decreases(B) Remains same(C) Increases(D) First increases then decreases
Answer: (C) Increases
5.Which property of ethanol makes it suitable for cleaning wounds?
(A) Good solvent(B) Volatility(C) Antiseptic(D) Deodorizing
Answer: (C) Antiseptic
6.Alcohols have higher fuel efficiency as compared to:
(A) Natural gas(B) Petrol or diesel fuels(C) Coal(D) Nuclear energy
Answer: (B) Petrol or diesel fuels (as per the textbook statement).
7.Which alcohol is used to accomplish all the following tasks:
It is added in petrol to improve combustion. It serves as a feed stock to prepare vinegar and many other organic compounds.
(A) Propanol(B) Propan-2-ol(C) Ethanol(D) Methanol
Answer: (C) Ethanol – blended with petrol and oxidised to ethanoic acid (vinegar).
8.Ethanol and isopropanol help to:
(A) Dissolve many drugs(B) Destroy drugs(C) Increase drug toxicity(D) Decrease drug effectiveness
Answer: (A) Dissolve many drugs

Q.2Write short answers to following questions.(6×2=12)
i.Give any two disadvantages of fermentation reactions.
  • It is a slow process that takes several days.
  • It gives dilute, impure ethanol (only about 12–15%) that needs distillation; it is a batch process.
ii.How does heat of combustion change in alcohol homologous series?
It increases as the number of carbon atoms increases (about 650 kJ/mol for each additional CH2): methanol 726, ethanol 1367, propanol 2017, butanol 2676 kJ/mol.
iii.Write the conditions involved in the hydration of ethene.
Ethene and steam, H3PO4 catalyst, temperature about 300°C and pressure about 60–70 atm.
iv.Give two disadvantages of using alcohols as fuels.
  • Lower energy content than petrol, so more fuel is needed for the same distance.
  • Growing crops for fuel competes with food and land; alcohol absorbs water and can corrode engine parts.
v.Why do we get relatively impure alcohol in the fermentation process?
The yeast stops working at about 12–15% ethanol, so the product is a dilute mixture with water, yeast and by-products (such as aldehydes, acids and fusel oil), which must be removed by distillation.
vi.Write general formula of alcohol.
CnH2n+1OH (or R–OH).
(PART – II)
Note: Attempt the following question.
Q.3:Describe the applications of ethanol in pharmaceutical and cosmetic Industries?(5)
Pharmaceutical: good solvent for drugs, tinctures, cough syrups and extracts (ethanol and isopropanol dissolve many drugs); antiseptic and disinfectant for cleaning wounds, skin and instruments (hand sanitizers); preservative in medicines.
Cosmetic: solvent for fragrances in perfumes, deodorants and after-shave lotions; highly volatile, so it evaporates quickly with a cooling and deodorizing effect; used in hair sprays, creams and nail polish removers.
