Q.2  Write short answers to following questions.(6×2=12)
i.What is the difference between sedimentation and filtration?
Ans: In sedimentation, suspended particles settle at the bottom due to gravity when water is left undisturbed. In filtration, the water is passed through a filter (sand, gravel, filter paper) which holds back the suspended particles.
ii.What is the sequence of steps in treating domestic water supply?
Ans: Screening → sedimentation (with coagulants) → filtration → disinfection (chlorination) → storage and supply.
iii.Why fertilizers containing nitrogen element are added into the soil?
Ans: Plants need nitrogen to make proteins and chlorophyll. Soil often lacks enough nitrogen, so nitrogen fertilizers are added to give healthy green growth and a better yield.
iv.What is the annual rainfall in northern Pakistan?
Ans: Northern Pakistan receives much more rainfall than the rest of the country. (Write the exact figure given in your textbook.)
v.What is trachoma disease?
Ans: Trachoma is a bacterial eye infection spread through unclean water and poor hygiene. It causes irritation and scarring of the eyelids and can lead to blindness.
vi.What is the role of nitrogen in plant growth?
Ans: Nitrogen helps leaf and stem growth, is part of chlorophyll and proteins, and gives plants a dark green colour.
(PART – II)
Note: Attempt the following question.
Q.3:  How can you avoid the negative effects of pollutants present in water?(5)
Ans:
• Treat industrial and domestic waste-water before releasing it into rivers and lakes.
• Use fertilizers and pesticides in controlled amounts so they do not wash into water.
• Remove suspended solids by sedimentation and filtration, and kill microbes by chlorination or boiling.
• Remove odour and colour with activated charcoal.
• Dispose of plastics and heavy-metal wastes properly and spread public awareness.
