ChemistryChapter-19 (Subjective)Class Test-1
TIME: 22 MINMARKS: 20
Attempt any 10 Questions.10×2=20
i. What is the importance of ammonia?(Q-1)
Ammonia is used to make fertilizers (urea, ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate), nitric acid, explosives and synthetic fibres like nylon. It is also used as a refrigerant and in cleaning agents.
ii. How is nitrogen separated from oxygen in air?(Q-4)
By fractional distillation of liquid air. Air is compressed, cooled and liquefied. On slow warming, nitrogen (b.p. −196 °C) boils off first, leaving oxygen (b.p. −183 °C).
iii. What is the main industrial method for producing sulphuric acid? Write it’s steps.(Q-6)
Contact process. Steps: (1) Burning sulphur (or roasting pyrites) gives SO2. (2) SO2 is purified and dried. (3) SO2 is oxidised to SO3 over V2O5 catalyst at about 450 °C. (4) SO3 is absorbed in 98% H2SO4 to form oleum. (5) Oleum is diluted with water to get H2SO4.
iv. How SO3 is formed in contact chamber?(Q-9)
Purified SO2 and O2 pass over V2O5 catalyst at 400–450 °C and 1–2 atm:
2SO2 + O2 ⇌ 2SO3  (exothermic)
v. What are oxides? Write its properties.(Q-11)
Oxides are binary compounds of oxygen with another element. Properties: metal oxides are generally basic and ionic; non-metal oxides are generally acidic and covalent; some are amphoteric (ZnO, Al2O3) or neutral (CO, NO). Oxygen shows oxidation state −2 in them.
vi. What are neutral oxides? Give examples.(Q-14)
Oxides that are neither acidic nor basic and do not react with acids or bases. Examples: CO, NO, N2O, H2O.
vii. What is metal? How do metals usually occur in the Earth’s crust?(Q-17)
A metal is an element that loses electrons to form cations; it is lustrous, malleable and a good conductor. Reactive metals occur as compounds (oxides, sulphides, carbonates, chlorides) called ores; least reactive metals (Au, Pt) occur free.
viii. How oxide are formed?(Q-21)
By burning an element in oxygen, e.g. 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO; or by heating carbonates, hydroxides or nitrates, e.g. CaCO3 → CaO + CO2.
ix. How do metals react with dilute acids?(Q-23)
Metals above hydrogen in the reactivity series displace hydrogen, forming a salt:
Mg + 2HCl → MgCl2 + H2↑
Metals like Cu and Ag do not react.
x. How least reactive metals react with water?(Q-26)
Least reactive metals (Cu, Ag, Au, Pt) do not react with cold water or steam at all.
xi. What are primary pollutants?(Q-29)
Pollutants emitted directly into the atmosphere from a source, e.g. CO, SO2, NOx, hydrocarbons and particulates.
xii. How is NO produced naturally?(Q-31)
During lightning, the high temperature makes nitrogen and oxygen of air combine:
N2 + O2 → 2NO
xiii. How does NOx contribute to acid rain?(Q-33)
NO is oxidised to NO2, which dissolves in rain water to form nitric and nitrous acids:
2NO + O2 → 2NO2 ; 2NO2 + H2O → HNO3 + HNO2
xiv. What are the harmful effects of acid rain? Write it’s pH.(Q-35)
It damages buildings and statues (marble, limestone), corrodes metals, harms crops and forests, acidifies soil and lakes, and kills aquatic life. Its pH is below 5.6 (usually 4–5).
