Chapter Wise Class TestT-5Chapter-19Nitrogen and Sulphur
Total Marks: 17(Subjective Type)Time: 33 Minutes
2.Write short answers to any six (6) questions.[6 × 2 = 12]
  1. Explain the Haber process briefly.
Ans: Ammonia is made by combining nitrogen and hydrogen in the ratio 1:3: N2 + 3H2 ⇌ 2NH3 + heat. Conditions: about 200 atm pressure, 450 °C temperature and finely divided iron as catalyst. The ammonia is liquefied and removed; unreacted gases are recycled.
  2. How is nitrogen obtained from air?
Ans: Air is cooled and compressed until it becomes liquid. Liquid air is fractionally distilled: nitrogen (b.p. -196 °C) boils off first, leaving oxygen (b.p. -183 °C).
  3. How is sulphur dioxide prepared in the Contact Process? Write chemical reactions.
    Ans: By burning sulphur in air: S + O2 → SO2. Or by roasting iron pyrite: 4FeS2 + 11O2 → 2Fe2O3 + 8SO2.
  4. Why are gases dried before oxidation in Contact process?
Ans: Moisture and impurities poison (reduce the efficiency of) the V2O5 catalyst, and moisture forms acid mist that corrodes the apparatus. So the gases are purified and dried with concentrated H2SO4.
  5. Write the conditions required for oxidation of SO2.
    Ans: 2SO2 + O2 ⇌ 2SO3 + heat. Conditions: temperature 450 °C, pressure 1-2 atm, V2O5 catalyst, excess of oxygen, and pure dry gases.
  6. Why non-metal oxides are acidic.
    Ans: Non-metal oxides dissolve in water to form acids (e.g. SO3 + H2O → H2SO4; CO2 + H2O → H2CO3) and react with bases to form salts.
  7. What are Neutral oxides? Briefly explain with examples.
Ans: Oxides that show neither acidic nor basic properties; they do not react with acids or bases and do not form acids or bases with water. Examples: CO, NO, N2O.
  8. Why high pressure is maintained in the production of ammonia?
Ans: The reaction reduces the number of gas moles (4 → 2). By Le Chatelier’s principle, high pressure shifts the equilibrium forward and increases the yield of NH3.
  9. Why lead oxide is called amphotenic oxide?
    Ans: PbO reacts with both acids and bases: PbO + 2HCl → PbCl2 + H2O and PbO + 2NaOH → Na2PbO2 + H2O. Hence it is amphoteric.
Note: Attempt any one question.[5 × 1 = 5]
3.What are the sources of nitrogen and hydrogen gases used in Haber’s process? Explain it.
Ans:
  • Nitrogen: from air by fractional distillation of liquid air.
  • Hydrogen: from natural gas (methane) by steam reforming: CH4 + H2O → CO + 3H2 (about 750 °C, nickel catalyst); then CO + H2O → CO2 + H2.
  • The gases are mixed in the ratio 1:3, compressed to about 200 atm, passed over iron catalyst at 450 °C: N2 + 3H2 ⇌ 2NH3. Ammonia is liquefied and unreacted gases are recycled.
4.Describe the contact process for the production of sulphuric acid.
Ans:
  • Preparation of SO2: S + O2 → SO2 (or roasting FeS2).
  • Purification: gases are purified and dried to protect the catalyst.
  • Oxidation: 2SO2 + O2 ⇌ 2SO3 + heat, at 450 °C, 1-2 atm with V2O5 catalyst.
  • Absorption: SO3 is absorbed in 98% H2SO4 to form oleum: SO3 + H2SO4 → H2S2O7.
  • Dilution: oleum + water gives concentrated H2SO4: H2S2O7 + H2O → 2H2SO4.
