Metal oxides are typically:
(A) Covalent compounds(B) Ionic compounds(C) Metallic compounds(D) Molecular compounds
Answer: (B) Ionic compounds
3.
SO3 is absorbed in H2SO4 rather than H2O during the production of sulphuric acid because:
(A) SO3 does not react with H2O(B) Reaction of SO3 with H2O is highly exothermic producing mist of H2SO4 which is difficult to condense.(C) It gives better yield of H2SO4(D) reaction of SO3 with H2O can cause explosion.

Oxides formed when oxygen reacts with metals:
(A) Acidic(B) Basic(C) Both basic and amphoteric(D) Neutral
Answer: (C) Both basic and amphoteric (e.g. Na2O, MgO are basic; Al2O3, ZnO are amphoteric).
6.

(PART – I)
Q.2 Write short answers to following questions.(6×2=12)
i.
How do magnesium and calcium differ with each other towards their reactions with water?
Magnesium reacts very slowly with cold water (readily only with steam: Mg + H2O → MgO + H2), while calcium reacts steadily with cold water: Ca + 2H2O → Ca(OH)2 + H2. Calcium is more reactive because it is larger and loses electrons more easily.
ii.
What are metals?
Elements that readily lose electrons to form positive ions. They are lustrous, malleable, ductile and good conductors of heat and electricity, e.g. Na, Mg, Fe, Cu.
iii.
Which secondary pollutants are produced by oxides of nitrogen?
Ozone (O3) and peroxyacyl nitrates (PAN), formed by sunlight acting on NO2 and hydrocarbons; they are the main components of photochemical smog.
iv.
Give an example of displacement reaction.
Zn + CuSO4 → ZnSO4 + Cu (more reactive zinc displaces copper from its salt solution).
v.
How SO2 present in the atmosphere is converted to SO3?
SO2 is oxidised by atmospheric oxygen, ozone or other oxidants (in presence of sunlight and dust/catalytic particles): 2SO2 + O2 → 2SO3. SO3 then dissolves in rain water to form H2SO4.
vi.
What is photochemical smog?
A brownish haze formed when sunlight reacts with nitrogen oxides and volatile hydrocarbons from vehicle exhaust, producing ozone and PAN. It irritates eyes and lungs.
(PART – II)
Note: Attempt the following question.
Q.3: Describe the role of oxides of nitrogen in the formation of PAN and the acid rain.(5)
Formation of NOx: At the high temperature in vehicle engines, N2 + O2 → 2NO; NO is oxidised in air: 2NO + O2 → 2NO2.
PAN: In sunlight NO2 splits: NO2 → NO + O. The oxygen atom forms ozone (O + O2 → O3). NO2 also combines with radicals from hydrocarbons to give peroxyacyl nitrates (PAN), the irritants of photochemical smog.
Acid rain: NO2 dissolves in rain water: 4NO2 + 2H2O + O2 → 4HNO3. Together with H2SO4 from SO2, this lowers rain pH below 5.6, damaging plants, soil, buildings and water life.
