CHEMISTRYCHAPTER-24 (SUBJECTIVE)CLASS TEST-1
TIME: 22 MINMARKS: 22
Attempt any 7 Questions.7×2=14
i. What is carboxylic acid? Give example.
Ans: An organic compound containing the carboxyl group (–COOH) is called a carboxylic acid. Example: ethanoic (acetic) acid, CH3COOH.
ii. What types of substance can be converted to vinegar?
Ans: Substances containing sugar, starch or ethanol, e.g. fruit juices (apple, grapes), malt, molasses and dilute ethanol solutions.
iii. Why is liquid stirred continuously during fermentation?
Ans: To mix air (oxygen) well into the liquid so that the bacteria can oxidise ethanol to ethanoic acid quickly and evenly.
iv. Write a chemical reaction of carboxylic acid with carbonates or what is observed when ethanoic acid reacts with sodium carbonate?
Ans: 2CH3COOH + Na2CO3 → 2CH3COONa + H2O + CO2↑
Brisk effervescence is observed due to release of CO2 gas, which turns lime water milky.
v. How ester formed? Give equation.
Ans: A carboxylic acid reacts with an alcohol in the presence of conc. H2SO4:
CH3COOH + C2H5OH ⇌ CH3COOC2H5 + H2O
vi. Write the industrial use of ethyl acetate.
Ans: Used as a solvent in paints, lacquers, nail-polish removers and perfumes, and for artificial fruit flavours.
vii. Write the application of organic acid in food industry.
Ans: Organic acids (citric, acetic, tartaric etc.) are used as preservatives, to give sour taste and flavour in pickles, soft drinks, sauces and sweets.
viii. Write the uses of Palmitic and Stearic acid.
Ans: Used in making soaps, candles, detergents, cosmetics and lubricants.
ix. Write the properties of glacial acetic acid (Interesting Information)
Ans: Pure (100%) acetic acid; colourless liquid with pungent smell; freezes at about 16.6 °C into ice-like crystals; miscible with water; corrosive.
x. Why are food preservatives added to food?
Ans: To stop the growth of bacteria and fungi, prevent spoilage and increase the shelf life of food.
xi. What is Plexiglass?
Ans: Plexiglass is polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a transparent, light and strong plastic used instead of glass.
SECTION-II
1. What is an esterification reaction?(Ex. B. 24.1)
Ans: The reaction of a carboxylic acid with an alcohol in the presence of conc. H2SO4 to form an ester and water.
2. Why sufficient oxygen is provided during fermentation to prepare acetic acid from ethanol?(Ex. B. 24.3)
Ans: Ethanol is oxidised to ethanoic acid by bacteria that need oxygen:
CH3CH2OH + O2 → CH3COOH + H2O
