CHEMISTRYCHAPTER-17 (SUBJECTIVE)CLASS TEST-2
TIME: 22 MINMARKS: 20
Attempt any 10 Questions.10 × 2 = 20
i.Why is the study of rate of reaction important?
It helps us speed up useful reactions (industry, medicines), slow down harmful ones (rusting, food spoilage) and choose the best conditions for production.
ii.What is an effective collision?
A collision between reactant particles having at least the activation energy and the correct orientation, so that products are formed.
iii.What is activation energy?
The minimum energy that colliding particles must have to start a chemical reaction (symbol: Ea).
iv.State the law of conservation of mass.
Mass can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction; total mass of reactants = total mass of products.
v.Give an example where mass decreases during a reaction.
Burning of coal/wood in open air – the ash weighs less because gases (CO2, water vapour) escape. Also heating CaCO3 in an open vessel.
vi.Define endothermic reaction. Give example.
A reaction that absorbs heat from the surroundings (ΔH is positive). Example: CaCO3 → CaO + CO2 (on heating).
vii.By how much does the rate of reaction change for many reactions with a 10°C rise?
The rate of reaction roughly doubles (increases about 2 to 3 times) for every 10°C rise in temperature.
viii.Write the name of factor that affecting the rates of reaction.
Nature of reactants, concentration, temperature, surface area, pressure (for gases), catalyst, light.
ix.How does increasing concentration affect reaction rate?
More particles per unit volume → more frequent collisions → more effective collisions, so the rate increases.
x.How does concentration affect the rate of reaction?
Higher concentration increases the rate (greater number of collisions per second); lower concentration decreases it.
xi.Define a catalyst.
A substance that changes the rate of a reaction without being used up; it lowers the activation energy.
xii.What are enzymes?
Biological catalysts (proteins) produced by living cells that speed up reactions in living things.
xiii.Why are enzymes highly specific?
Each enzyme has an active site of a particular shape that fits only one substrate (lock-and-key model).
xiv. What causes fruits and vegetables to ripen?
Enzymatic reactions (helped by the plant hormone ethylene) change starch into sugar and soften the fruit.
