Q.2   Write short answers to following questions.(6×2=12)
i.
What happens when electricity is passed through an aqueous solution of NaCl?
Answer NaCl solution (brine) is electrolysed. Hydrogen gas is released at the cathode and chlorine gas at the anode, while sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution is left in the cell.
  • Cathode: 2H+ + 2e− → H2 (g)
  • Anode: 2Cl− → Cl2 (g) + 2e−
ii.
What is the oxidation number of hydrogen in different compounds?
Answer
  • +1 in most compounds (e.g. HCl, H2O).
  • −1 in metal hydrides (e.g. NaH, CaH2).
  • 0 in hydrogen molecule (H2).
iii.
What are the main objectives of electroplating?
Answer
  • To protect a metal from corrosion (rusting).
  • To give the object an attractive, shiny appearance.
  • To increase the hardness, thickness and wear resistance of the surface.
iv.
Define oxidation and reduction in terms of oxidation number.
Answer Oxidation: a process in which the oxidation number of an element increases.
Reduction: a process in which the oxidation number of an element decreases.
v.
How does an electrolyte conduct electricity?
Answer In the molten state or in aqueous solution, an electrolyte has freely moving ions. When a voltage is applied, positive ions move to the cathode and negative ions move to the anode, so the electric current is carried through the electrolyte by these ions.
vi.
Which ions are present in the brine solution?
Answer Na+ and Cl− (from NaCl), and H+ and OH− (from water).

(PART – II)

Note: Attempt the following question.
Q.3:  Define electrolysis. How does the process of electrolysis take place?(5)
Answer Definition: Electrolysis is the process in which an electric current is passed through a molten or aqueous electrolyte, causing it to decompose chemically.

Process:
  • Two inert electrodes (e.g. Pt or graphite) are dipped in the electrolyte and connected to a battery. The electrode joined to the positive terminal is the anode; the one joined to the negative terminal is the cathode.
  • The electrolyte contains freely moving ions. Positive ions (cations) move to the cathode and gain electrons (reduction).
  • Negative ions (anions) move to the anode and lose electrons (oxidation).
  • The electrons released at the anode travel through the external circuit to the cathode, so the circuit is completed.
Example (molten NaCl):
Cathode: Na+ + e− → Na(l)
Anode: 2Cl− → Cl2 (g) + 2e−
