CHEMISTRYCHAPTER-16 (SUBJECTIVE)CLASS TEST-2
TIME: 22 MINMARKS: 20

Attempt any 10 Questions.

i. Define oxidation number.

Ans: The apparent charge an atom would have in a compound if all shared electrons were assigned to the more electronegative atom.

ii. Find out the oxidation number of sulphur in sulphate (SO4−2)

Ans: Let S = x. x + 4(−2) = −2 ⇒ x − 8 = −2 ⇒ x = +6

iii. How can the chemical formula of a compound be written?

Ans: Write the symbols of the elements (positive ion first), write their charges/valencies, cross them over as subscripts and reduce to the simplest ratio. Example: Al+3 and SO4−2 → Al2(SO4)3

iv. Write the formula of aluminum sulphate.

Ans: Al2(SO4)3

v. Define oxidation in terms of oxygen and hydrogen. Give any example.

Ans: Oxidation is the gain of oxygen or the loss of hydrogen. Example: 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO

vi. What is a redox reaction?

Ans: A reaction in which oxidation and reduction occur at the same time. Example: Zn + Cu+2 → Zn+2 + Cu

vii. Define anode and cathode .

Ans: Anode: the electrode where oxidation takes place. Cathode: the electrode where reduction takes place.

viii. What happens if a metal is below hydrogen in the electrochemical series? Give example.

Ans: It cannot displace hydrogen from dilute acids. Example: Cu, Ag and Au do not react with dilute HCl.

ix. Write the reaction of cathode and anode with inert electrodes.

Ans: Molten NaCl with inert electrodes. Cathode: Na+ + e− → Na. Anode: 2Cl− → Cl2 + 2e−

x. Write two advantages of fuel cells over fossil fuels.

Ans: (1) Pollution free; the product is water. (2) Higher efficiency and continuous electricity while fuel is supplied.

xi. What is corrosion?

Ans: The gradual destruction of a metal by chemical or electrochemical reaction with its environment. Example: rusting of iron.

xii. Write the name of methods to prevent corrosion.

Ans: Painting, oiling/greasing, galvanizing, electroplating, alloying and cathodic protection.

xiii. What is electroplating?

Ans: Depositing a thin layer of one metal on another by passing electric current through an electrolyte.

xiv. Write the properties of good electrolyte.

Ans: (1) Dissolves easily and gives free ions. (2) Good conductor in solution/molten state. (3) Does not react with the electrodes.

xv. What are half-cells in a Daniel cell?

Ans: Zn rod in ZnSO4 solution (oxidation, anode) and Cu rod in CuSO4 solution (reduction, cathode), joined by a salt bridge.
