PhysicsChapter-11 (Subjective)Class Test-1
TIME: 20 MINMARKS: 23
Attempt any 7 Questions.7 × 2 = 14
1. What is conduction?
Ans: Conduction is the transfer of heat through a substance from particle to particle without the movement of the substance itself, mainly in solids.
2. How do convection currents use to warm homes and offices?
Ans: A heater warms the air near it. The warm air becomes lighter and rises, cooler air sinks to take its place, and this circulation warms the whole room.
3. Why does a land breeze occur at night?
Ans: At night land cools faster than the sea. Warm air over the sea rises and cooler air from the land moves toward the sea to replace it.
4. Why does a cold glass of water warm up?
Ans: Heat flows from the warmer surroundings to the colder water until both reach the same temperature.
5. What is the greenhouse effect?
Ans: Greenhouse gases trap part of the heat radiated by the Earth, keeping the atmosphere warm.
6. Why does the handle of a cooking pan stay cool?
Ans: The handle is made of an insulator such as plastic or wood, which is a poor conductor of heat.
7. What are the three primary types of heat transfer?
Ans: Conduction, convection and radiation.
8. What natural phenomenon causes land and sea breezes?
Ans: Convection currents caused by the unequal heating and cooling of land and sea.
9. What is radiation, and how does it transfer heat?
Ans: Radiation is heat transfer by electromagnetic (infrared) waves. It needs no medium and can travel through a vacuum.
10. How do birds like eagles and gliders manage to stay aloft without flapping their wings for hours?
Ans: They ride rising warm air currents (thermals), which lift them upward.
SECTION-II (5+4)
1. Describe how convection occurs in fluids. How do convection currents contribute to natural phenomena such as sea breezes and wind patterns?
Ans: When a fluid is heated it expands, becomes less dense and rises; cooler, denser fluid sinks and takes its place, forming a convection current. Unequal heating of land and sea creates sea and land breezes, and uneven heating of the Earth creates wind patterns.
2. Compare the absorption and emission of heat by different surfaces. How does the colour and texture of a surface affect its ability to absorb and emit heat?
Ans: Dull black and rough surfaces are the best absorbers and best emitters of heat radiation. Shiny, white and polished surfaces are poor absorbers and poor emitters, because they reflect most of the radiation.
