Q2. Write short answers to any four questions.4×2=8
- (i)Why regular maintenance is more important for user?Regular maintenance keeps the system fast, secure and reliable, prevents sudden failures and data loss, and extends the life of hardware and software.
- (ii)What is resource monitor describing its responsibilities?Resource Monitor is a Windows tool that shows real-time use of CPU, memory, disk and network by each process. It helps find which program is slowing the system and lets the user end or analyse it.
- (iii)Why bootable storage media is important? It lets you start a computer that cannot boot normally, so you can install Windows, repair startup problems, run recovery tools or restore data.
- (iv)List the two benefits of running regular disk cleanup.1) It frees disk space by deleting temporary and junk files. 2) It improves system speed and performance.
- (v)Define the use of Safe Mode in system recovery.Safe Mode starts Windows with only essential drivers and services, so faulty drivers, malware or bad software can be found, removed or fixed.
- (vi)What happens during the Power-On Self-Test (POST).When the computer is switched on, the BIOS/UEFI checks hardware such as CPU, RAM, keyboard and storage. If all is fine, it hands control to the boot loader; otherwise it shows an error or beep code.
Q3. Write short answers to any four questions.4×2=8
- (i)What is POST test? Why it is important? Also give an example.POST is a startup hardware check done by the BIOS. It is important because it detects faulty hardware before the OS loads. Example: a missing RAM stick causes continuous beeps.
- (ii)What is meant by preventing maintenance?Preventive maintenance means regular planned tasks, such as cleaning, updates, backups and scans, done to avoid problems before they happen.
- (iii)What are the responsibilities of window’s defender? It gives real-time protection, scans for viruses and malware, quarantines or removes threats, and updates its definitions automatically.
- (iv)List the steps to create a bootable USB using Rufus.1) Insert the USB drive. 2) Open Rufus and select the device. 3) Click SELECT and choose the ISO file. 4) Choose partition scheme (MBR/GPT). 5) Click START and wait until it shows READY.
- (v)What is restore point?A restore point is a saved snapshot of system files, settings and registry. It lets you return Windows to an earlier working state.
- (vi)What is boot order and boot repair?Boot order is the sequence of devices the BIOS checks for an operating system (e.g. USB, then HDD). Boot repair fixes damaged startup files so Windows can start again.
Q4. Write short answers to any four questions.4×2=8
- (i)Why Keeping proper records is compulsory for future maintenance?Records of repairs, settings, licences and hardware changes help technicians find past problems quickly and plan future maintenance.
- (ii)When we use bootable recovery media? We use it when Windows will not start, files are corrupted, or a system restore, reinstall or startup repair is needed.
- (iii)How could you define windows safe mode?Safe Mode is a diagnostic startup mode that loads minimal drivers and services for troubleshooting.
- (iv)Write one key function of the Resource Monitor. It displays live CPU, memory, disk and network usage per process.
- (v)How does Windows Defender help in maintaining system health? It scans and removes malware and viruses, protects in real time and keeps the system secure and stable.
- (vi)Why is the boot order setting important when using recovery tools from a USB drive? The computer must check the USB first; otherwise it boots from the hard disk and the recovery tools will not load.

Note: Attempt any TWO questions.2×8=16
Q.5.
Briefly explain any two preventive maintenance techniques that help to keep a computer running smoothly.
81) Disk Cleanup and Defragmentation: Removing temporary files and junk frees space; defragmenting an HDD arranges files so they load faster (SSDs use TRIM instead). 2) Updates and Antivirus Scans: Installing Windows and driver updates fixes bugs and security holes, while regular antivirus scans remove malware. Other techniques are regular backups, dust cleaning and checking cables.
Q.6.
Describe data recovery tools and techniques used in MS windows.
8Tools: File History and Backup & Restore (restore saved copies); Recycle Bin (restore deleted files); Previous Versions (restore older file versions); System Restore (return to a restore point); Windows Recovery Environment (Startup Repair, Command Prompt, System Image Recovery); CHKDSK (repairs disk errors); Windows File Recovery (command-line tool for deleted files); OneDrive version history. Techniques: restore from backup, restore from restore point, boot from recovery media, and stop using the drive after deletion so data is not overwritten.
Q.7.
Explain the roles of Task Manager and Event Viewer in system maintenance. Give one example for each tool where it can help solve a problem.
8Task Manager: shows running processes, performance, startup programs and services, and lets you end tasks. Example: if the PC is very slow, you open Task Manager, find a program using 100% CPU and end it. Event Viewer: records system, application and security logs with errors and warnings. Example: if the PC restarts suddenly, Event Viewer shows the error (e.g. a driver failure) that caused it, so you can update or remove that driver.
