Polymers
2. Write short answers to any six (6) questions.[6 × 2 = 12]
(i)
What are Polymers?
Polymers are giant molecules formed by joining a large number of small repeating units (monomers) through covalent bonds. Example: polythene.
(ii)
What is an addition polymers?
A polymer formed by the repeated addition of monomers containing a double bond, without loss of any small molecule. Example: n CH2=CH2 → [−CH2−CH2−]n (polythene).
(iii)
How does condensation polymerization reaction occur?
Monomers having two functional groups join together, and a small molecule such as H2O or HCl is eliminated at every step of the reaction.
(iv)
How is condensation polymer formed from a diamine and dicarboxylic acid?
The −NH2 group of the diamine reacts with the −COOH group of the dicarboxylic acid, eliminating H2O and forming an amide linkage (−CONH−). Repetition gives a polyamide such as Nylon-6,6.
(v)
Write any two characteristics properties of addition polymerization.
1) Monomers contain a double bond (C=C). 2) No small molecule is eliminated, so the polymer has the same empirical formula as the monomer.
(vi)
How starting monomer are prepare from addition monomer?
Starting monomers such as ethene (CH2=CH2) and propene are obtained from petroleum and natural gas by cracking of hydrocarbons.
(vii)
Write the specific properties of polymer.
They depend on the type and proportion of monomers used and the method of polymerization; e.g. strength, flexibility, chemical resistance and melting point.
(viii)
What do you understand by the term repeating unit?
The smallest structural unit that repeats again and again along the polymer chain, e.g. [−CH2−CH2−] in polythene.
(ix)
Why does Polymerization continue at both ends?
Because each monomer in condensation polymerization has two reactive functional groups, so the chain keeps growing from both of its ends.
Note: Attempt any one question.[5 × 1 = 5]
3.
What is polymerization? Give its importance.
Polymerization is the process in which many small monomer molecules combine to form a large polymer molecule.
Importance: it produces plastics, synthetic fibres (nylon, polyester), rubber, Teflon coatings and packaging materials that are strong, light, flexible, chemically resistant and cheap to make.

4.
Write the Differences between Addition and Condensation Polymerizations.
| Addition polymerization | Condensation polymerization |
|---|---|
| Monomers contain a double bond | Monomers contain two functional groups |
| No small molecule is eliminated | A small molecule (H2O, HCl) is eliminated |
| Chain growth reaction | Step growth reaction |
| Example: Polythene, Teflon | Example: Nylon-6,6, PET |
