ChemistryChapter-21 (Subjective)Class Test-1
i.What are organic compound?
(Q-1)Compounds that contain carbon (usually bonded with hydrogen, and often oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur or halogens) are called organic compounds, e.g. CH4, C2H5OH.
ii.Define organic chemistry.
(Q-4)The branch of chemistry which deals with the study of carbon compounds (other than carbonates, oxides of carbon, etc.), their structures, properties and reactions is called organic chemistry.
iii.Define and example of heterocyclic compounds.
(Q-7)Cyclic compounds whose ring contains atoms of carbon and at least one other element (N, O or S) are heterocyclic compounds. Example: pyridine C5H5N, furan C4H4O.
iv.What is structure formula?
(Q-11)A formula that shows the arrangement of atoms and bonds in a molecule. Example: ethanol CH3–CH2–OH.
v.What is display formula? Give example
(Q-13)A structural formula in which all atoms and all covalent bonds are shown. Example: methane
vi.Write the displayed and condense formula of propane
(Q-15)Condensed: CH3CH2CH3 (C3H8)
Displayed:

vii. What is meant by family of organic compounds?
(Q-17)A group of organic compounds having the same functional group and similar chemical properties, e.g. alcohols (–OH), carboxylic acids (–COOH).
viii.Write any two characteristics of homologous series.
(Q-20)1) All members have the same functional group and general formula.
2) Adjacent members differ by a CH2 unit (14 amu) and show a gradual change in physical properties.
2) Adjacent members differ by a CH2 unit (14 amu) and show a gradual change in physical properties.
ix.What happens to the number of isomers as a number of carbon atom of increase?
(Q-22)The number of possible isomers increases rapidly (e.g. C4H10 has 2, C5H12 has 3, C30H62 has over four billion).
x.Define. Functional group.
(Q-26)An atom or group of atoms in a molecule that determines its characteristic chemical properties, e.g. –OH, –COOH, >C=O.
xi.What is alkane?
(Q-30)Saturated hydrocarbons having only single covalent bonds (C–C and C–H) with general formula CnH2n+2, e.g. CH4, C2H6.
xii.Write any two rules of giving the name of alcohol
(Q-35)1) Select the longest carbon chain containing the –OH group; drop the last “e” of the alkane and add “ol”.
2) Number the chain so that the –OH carbon gets the lowest number, e.g. propan-2-ol.
2) Number the chain so that the –OH carbon gets the lowest number, e.g. propan-2-ol.
xiii. What is ester? Write it’s general formula.
(Q-37)Esters are derivatives of carboxylic acids in which the H of –COOH is replaced by an alkyl group. General formula: RCOOR′
