Chicago experienced a tragic outbreak of violence Friday night when a 14-year-old boy was killed and eight other teenagers were wounded in two separate shootings near major downtown attractions, only hours after thousands gathered to celebrate the start of the holiday season.
Chicago witnessed a tragic night on Friday as a 14-year-old boy lost his life and eight other teenagers were wounded in two separate shootings just hours after the city launched its holiday season festivities. The violence erupted near popular downtown attractions, overshadowing the annual celebrations.
Teen Killed and Several Injured Near Chicago Theater
The first shooting occurred around 9:50 p.m. near the iconic Chicago Theater on State Street, only four hours after thousands gathered for the cityās official tree-lighting ceremony at Daley Plaza. Police reported that officers on patrol heard sudden gunfire as large groups of teens crowded the streets following what officials described as an unruly “teen takeover.”
Among the victims were boys aged 14 to 17 who received graze or leg wounds, as well as a 14-year-old girl shot in the hip. A 13-year-old girl was also taken to Lurie Childrenās Hospital in fair condition after being shot in the leg.
Second Shooting Leaves Another Teen Dead
Less than an hour later, another shooting took place near Federal Plaza, where a teen died from multiple gunshot wounds after being transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Another 18-year-old was found seriously injured with a leg wound.
City Leaders Condemn Violence
Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed deep concern, calling the attacks “the opposite of what the holiday season represents.” He said the chaos following the tree-lighting ceremony āset us back as a city and evokes fear.ā
Despite deploying more than 700 additional police officers for the event, authorities acknowledged that security measures fell short of preventing the violent gatherings.
Police Presence and Arrests
Police recovered five weapons and made 18 arrests throughout the night, though none of those detained are currently considered shooting suspects. Witnesses described chaotic scenes with sirens, ambulances, and police tape wrapped across State Street in front of the Chicago Theater and the Joffrey Ballet.
Growing Concern Over Youth Violence
City officials emphasized the urgent need to deter large, unsanctioned teen gatheringsāareas they say often become breeding grounds for violence. Alderman Brian Hopkins said nearly 300 juveniles were involved in riots, and several police officers were attacked with mace and stun guns.
National Reaction
President Donald Trump condemned the violence and credited his administrationās immigration enforcement operations with reducing crime rates, although Chicago officials dispute this claim. According to data through Nov. 14, the city has recorded 373 homicides this yearā242 fewer than during the same period in 2024.
Looking Ahead
Additional police forces will be dispatched for the upcoming Magnificent Mile Lights Festival as city leaders vow to refine public safety strategies. āWe will continue to make the necessary adjustments to ensure these events take place without the terror of gun violence,ā Mayor Johnson said.
